Sarcasm Detection in Tweets?!

French technology company Spotter has claimed it’s innovative technology can detect irony and sarcasm in Tweets, a problem that has been facing Twitter analytics companies for years. Spotter’s technology is supposedly able to identify a tweet like “Thanks Chili’s for delivering all three members of my party the wrong meal! Keep it up!” as strongly sarcastic and therefore negative.

  1. Interesting. As we discussed in class, picking up on the nuances of language is one of the most difficult challenges for natural language processors, although these are definitely getting better at this.
