Viral Videos Correlate with Stock Prices

Today Professor Mochon proved in class that United’s stock did not relate to Charron’s 2009 video United Breaks Guitars.

This is not the only time stocks have changed after a viral video. Gangnam Style, a viral video with over 1.78 billion views on YouTube may HAVE increased a Taiwanese stock. The Korean pop star’s “Gangnam Style” views strongly correlate with D I Corp stock. But why…?

Park Won-ho, chairman and controlling shareholder of D I Corp just so happens to be Psy’s dad. As you can see below, the company’s stock grew upwards of 500% after the release of the video in July 2012. Of course, as time progressed, both the hype of the viral video and the stock declined since.

  1. Very interesting. It goes to show what we discussed in class: that these videos can impact the bottom line (even if they don’t always do so).
